Understanding Leather: Types Explained (and Why Full Grain Is Best)

What Is Leather?

Leather is a natural material made from animal hides. The way it’s processed and finished determines its strength, durability, and appearance.

Not all leather is equal — most products use lower grades to cut costs.

What it is:
The top layer of the hide, with nothing sanded or corrected.

Key features:

  • Strongest and most durable
  • Develops a rich patina over time
  • Natural grain remains visible
  • Ages better, not worse

Why it’s best:
Full grain leather lasts for years, not months. It doesn’t crack or peel because the surface hasn’t been weakened.

Genuine Leather (Mid/Low Grade)

Genuine Leather

Made from the lower layers of the hide.

  • Heavily processed and coated
  • Designed to look like higher-quality leather
  • Less strength and durability

What this means for you:
Looks fine at first, but wears out much faster.

Top Grain Leather

Also from the top layer, but the surface has been sanded and finished.

  • Smoother, more uniform appearance
  • Slightly less durable
  • Often coated for consistency

What this means for you:
Still good quality, but less natural and won’t age the same way.
